Mel's Must Have Baby Products {12-15 Months Old}

It's time for another post about Mel's Must Have Baby Products.
I started this series because have gotten several emails from readers/friends who are pregnant with their first babies  (or just had their first babies) and they wanted my advice on baby items.

Luke is our 3rd (and final) baby and since he was born almost 4 years after Claire, I had given away ALL our baby stuff. 

 I wanted to be mindful of what I got for Luke knowing that it would only be used for him & then given away/donated. I only wanted to get the absolute necessary things to avoid lots of clutter in my house.

Here are my 12-15 month must haves: 

We love THIS wagon. We got it when we had the girls and it has totally held up. Luke (and the girls) love riding in it. It has cup holders and built in seats with little seat belts. Or, you can fold down the seat for more storage. The wheels rotate, so it is easy to turn when you are pulling the wagon. We also have THIS canopy to go with our wagon. Perfect for summer. Love, love, love it.

Is there anything cuter than a little boy pushing around a lawnmower? Luke is OBSESSED with THIS lawn mower. Every single time we play outside he goes straight for his lawn mower.

When Kate was a baby, I was coaching our high school soccer team and the team threw me a baby shower at one of our carbo loads. We didn't find out what we were having (for any of our kids) and they gave me THIS beautiful luxe cream blanket. It was SOOOO soft. I used it for her stroller and after she turned a year, I put it in her crib.

Luke is also obsessed with cars & trucks. We love anything Melissa & Doug, especially THIS. It's a truck and it has cars! Perfect for Luke!

I am slightly obsessed with little boy converse. Luke has 2 pairs of THESE and I love how durable they are. And, they are so cute!

I will admit....girl clothes are SO much cuter than boy clothes, but little boy clothes are growing on me. I love shirts like THIS with a cute pair of cargo pants like THESE.

We love THESE chairs from PBK. The girls each have their own and Luke was so obsessed with running into the girls rooms and sitting in them, that we got his own for Christmas this year. At almost 7 years old & 5 years old, my girls STILL sit in their chairs & read books.

Gotta love the Fisher Price Learn & Laugh toys. I keep THIS puppy in his crib and every morning (and sometimes in the middle of the night) I hear him giggling & playing with it.

Luke also LOVES books, once our kids turn 1 years old, they are really interested in books.

Mel's Must Have Baby Products {9-12 Months Old}

I wanted to be mindful of what I got for Luke knowing that it would only be used for him & then given away/donated. I only wanted to get the absolute necessary things to avoid lots of clutter in my house. I just can't handle clutter.

Here are my 9-12 month must haves:

Britax Marathon - This is hands down our favorite car seat to use after the babies are done with the infant seat. Both girls used them and now Luke does.  At 5 years old, Claire still uses hers in my car. They are easy to install and one of the safest on the market. They must be comfortable because none of my kids have complained about riding in them for long periods of time. In fact, once Kate switched to her booster, she complained that her booster wasn't comfortable & that she wanted to sit in her carseat. They last for years & years. Can't recommend this car seat enough!

Egg Stackers Set- Luke got a set of these this summer and he LOVES them. In fact, the girls love them also! He loves stacking them and matching up the eggs. He plays with them almost everyday.

Push Around Buggy - We were given one of these when Kate was a baby and they are so fun. Perfect for when they are about 9 months old  (and older!) It is a good alternative for going on a walk around the neighborhood or pushing it around the yard. All 3 of mine have loved this buggy.

PBK Chamois Stroller Blanket - Someone gave me this blanket after Kate was born and I always used it in her stroller when we went on walks. After Claire was born, we used it for her. Claire loved this blanket so much, it is now her "blankey". The one she sleeps with every.single.night. We have a blue one now for Luke (won't let him sleep with it yet) but it is perfect for chilly rides in the stroller now.

Old Navy Body Suits - After 3 kids, I can officially say that these onesies are the best. My kids wear oneies most days until they are 1 (I ditch the onesies after they turn 1) I love the Old Navy ones because they are totally affordable, so soft, and have totally adorable prints. I am a sucker for stripes, especially for boys. I think 75% of Luke's clothes have stripes (or plaid)

Gap Socks - These are my favorite socks for this age. At 9-12 months, babies are crawling all over the place, but these socks stay on. At 9-12 months, babies have discovered their feet and try and take socks off....these socks are really hard for them to take off. And, they have little grippers on the bottom, so as they are starting to cruise around & learn to stand/walk, these socks help them not slip.

Baby Food in Pouches - These were not around when I had the girls. LOVE them. So easy to bring on the go & not have to deal with the glass jars. I keep a back up in my car and one in my purse. By the time Luke was 1, he could feed them to himself (without making too big of a mess!)

Baby Food Pouch Spoons - I did not even know about these until my friend Becky was using them to feed her baby Evan at soccer a couple months ago.  They attach to any brand baby food pouch! After I saw Becky use them, I immediately bought some the next day. Even though Luke doesn't eat out of the pouches that much, they come in so handy. I use them almost everyday when I feed Luke in the car after I pick up Kate & while we wait to pick up Claire from school.

Carter's Footie PJ's - I am a pajama snob. I only buy these fleece jammies for my kids. The fleece holds up amazingly and the price can't be beat. After I had Kate, I saved all her clothes and used them for Claire. I couldn't believe how well these held up through BOTH girls. And, if you know my kids, you know they wear jammies ALL THE TIME. Luke practically lived his first 6 months of life in these jammies.

Vans Slip On Shoes - When kids are first starting to walk, it is all about soft soled shoes. Kevin loves Vans, so he was thrilled when I got Luke these baby vans. I am a fan of Pedipeds (and still am!) but these slip on Vans are great also, they stay on Luke's feet and have the soft soles which is so important for those early walkers!

Green Toys Trucks - Luke is all boy. We have dolls out, babies, Barbies, trucks and balls and Luke is alllll about the trucks & balls. Love these trucks (and they are Green... is made from 100% recycled plastic milk containers. Got love eco-friendly toys!

Rattle Roll Push Toy - We don't have this toy at our house, but Luke has it in the nursery and the ladies there always say how much he loves it. Anything Melissa & Doug is my favorite. Always good quality!

Baby Bath Tub Ring Seat - Luke is a busy, busy boy. Giving him a bath is a nightmare. He won't sit. Unlike the girls, they just sat & played with bath toys. All Luke wants to do is stand up & walk in the bathtub. So dangerous. Everytime I give him a bath, I end up getting soaked because I get in there with my clothes to try and keep him sitting (and safe) He doesn't like to just sit & play with bath toys anymore. I had to do something, so I bought one of these for Luke. If you have a wriggly kiddo in the tub, I recommend this!

Here are my 6-9 month must haves:

 

Bibs! 6-9 months is when most babies have their first foods and so bibs are a necessity. I love these bibs from PBK.  They are easy to clean & have a pocket to catch the food that doesn't go in his mouth. I call them the cherrio collector!

Also around 6-9 months is when babies start sitting up on their own and taking a bath in the regular bath tub. We love these bath toys, in fact, the girls STILL use this net in the bathtub. They think it is so fun. I have to remind them that it's Luke's now.

I start giving my kids sippy cups around 7-8 months so that by the time they are 11-12 months old they are totally done with the bottle. I like these sippy cups because they are easy for babies to learn on & they don't leak (that much) I have found that all beginner sippy cups leak a little bit, but these were the least leaky & Luke is a sippy cup master now. No more bottles...ever!!!

Next is one of my favorite & most versatile baby items. This travel high chair. We got this one when we had Kate. It is perfect to keep in your trunk. We have used it when we go to friends for dinner, I use it for when our friends (or Jack) come over to our house and we need an extra high chair. I bring it with us to Tahoe and on other vacations. It folds up & stores easily...and the tray is dishwasher safe. Best $25 spent! Go get one!

A thermometer. For some strange reason, we never got a thermometer when we had Kate or Claire. We just used the ghetto one that we got when we came home from the hospital. After almost 7 years, it was on the fritz, so I finally got one for Luke that was digtial & all you have to do is swipe it across the forehead. Life changing! Ha! We love it!

Glo worm!!! We had a pink one for the girls and I got the blue one for Luke. We stick it in his crib at night and naptime and he loves it. It lights up and plays lulabys. Luckily, it survived the Poop-a-poolza! ;)

Shopping Cart Cover/High Chair Cover. I am a germ a phobe, so these are necessary, in my opinion! 

So many cute designs and they add comfort to the shopping cart & high chair at restaurants.

Pedipeds are my absolute FAVORITE shoes for babies. I don't really have my kids wear shoes until 6 months or when they start crawling and pedipeds are by far the cutest and the best for their feet. When I had Kate I bought her 6 pairs of pedipeds...can you say overboard?!?! They were just so cute. Luckily, they are good quality shoes and I was able to use them for Claire (in fact, I still have them, so if Luke would have been a girl, they would have lasted for 3 kids) I showed self control with Luke and I have only purchased 1 pair of Pedipeds for him so far. They are perfect for begnining walkers because they have soft soles. Another good shoe for early walkers is Robeez, but they were too wide for my kids (my kids have narrow feet) So, we are a pediped family :)

Ages 6-9 months is one of my favorite stages because their little personalities are staring to show & they start "playing" with toys. Luke's nursery is a Sports theme, so I got these cute plush sports balls to put in his toy basket. At about 7 months he really started playing with them. They are so soft & he loves to roll them around. And, the girls love to throw them at him (and eachother) but they are so soft, they don't hurt. Love them.

Kate got this gumball machine toy for her first Christmas and it is SO cute. The girls loved playing with it and Luke loves it also. It is perfect for a baby who can sit on their own & play with toys. Love, love, love this gumball machine.

Another favorite is the stand up activity table. Luke loves the piano part. Keeps them busy for soooo long. Perfect for when they are learning to pull to a stand.

The classic little tykes swing. We have the red one. We had one for the girls at our old house & hung it from the tree in our front yard. For Luke, we put it on our swing set. He LOVES to swing. This swing is a classic.

Strollers:

Luke is still in his infant seat, so I use the Snap n Go if we are in a hurry or if he is asleep in his car seat.  But, now that he is older, he likes to be able to sit up & see stuff while in the stroller, so I use this stroller that I got when I had Kate. I love it. 

Maclaren Single Stroller

It is light weight,  easy to fold up and runs super smooth. Not bulky and folds up small. It has lasted through the wear & tear of 3 kids and still runs smoothly!

When you have more than 1 kid, a double stroller is also key.

I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my double Bob. We have the navy one. It come in navy or orange. I got it when Claire was a baby. 

We love to walk downtown to the Farmers Market or to the Bagel Shop or Starbucks & this stroller rocks.

BOB Revolution Duallie Stroller

What I really love about it is that even though it is a Double Stroller, it fits all 3 of my kids.

Claire & Luke sit in the seats & then if Kate gets tired, she hops on the foot rest area. This is what we brought when we went to Disneyland for 3 days and it worked out perfectly! For a double stroller it is so smooth and not heavy. We have had ours for over 4 years and it is still in great shape because they are made so well.

Here are my 3-6 month must haves:

This little plush toy/pacifer holder is genius!!! One of my sister's (single) guy friends got this for my nephew Jack and I had never seen it before or even heard of it! Way to go, single guy!  It holds the pacifer and lays on the babies chest so that if your baby is in the car seat (or wherever) it helps keep the pacifer from falling out. They did not have these when I had the girls! Genius!
There are 3 styles: lamb, elephant or giraffe.

Sophie the Giraffe Teether

 Great teether/squeaker/toy. Luke loves sophie and attacks her daily. 

Conair Infant Sound Machine
You know babies love white noise, right? I got this clock/sound machine when Claire was born (because Kate was still using hers). The reason I like this one is because it is a clock/sound machine combo. Kate doesn't use the sound machine part of it anymore, but loves being able to tell time. Claire still likes having her "ocean" on and being able to tell time. There are a few different sounds, nature, rain, ocean, birds, but we only use the ocean :)

Taggie Lovey
 What is it with babies & tags? All my babies had/have little taggie lovies & love them.
They are perfect bring in the car and on walks in the stroller. I know you aren't supposed to put them in the crib with them yet, but I do once my babies can crawl. Luke loves holding this next to his face. Precious.

Stuffed Animal Lovey
 Can you have too many lovies? I don't think so! Luke also has this one because it has a stuffed animal with it. I rotate which one I bring in the car & which one I put in his crib. I don't want him to get too attached to just one of them, so I use a variety of lovies.  I did this with the girls also (Maybe I shouldn't have with Claire, she is now a blanket/lovey hoarder and sleeps with 10 blankies/lovies/stuffed animals. Ha!)


Baby Whoozit Plush Infant Toy
This toy was given to us by my sister in law one of my baby showers for Kate. She said it was all 3 of her kids favorite little toys. We have used it for each kid. I don't know what it about this thing, but all 3 kids loved it & still love it. I bring it car rides, walks, and also throw it in the crib.

Graco Baby Bumper Jumper
Santa brought this for Luke at Christmas and let me tell you....he LOVES it. 
What I love about doorway jumpers (rather than the stand up jumpers) is that they are easy to store and move around. Luke is mostly in his jumper in doorway of our master bathroom in the mornings 
as I shower/get ready for work. He squeals with delight as he jumps. Totally recommend this!


Halo SleepSack Wearable Fleece Blanket
Our babies stopped wearing the Swaddle Me blankets at around 2-3 months, so that is when I started using the sleep sacks. Perfect to keep baby warm at night since they can't have blankets yet!

Baby Einstein Ocean Adventure Play Gym
Love this play mat. Keeps the baby entertained with all the lights & toys. And, it is super, super easy to wash. I washed ours in the washer several times and the shape/colors held up so well. Luke loved this playmat. We used it from about 2 months until 6 months old, then we passed it on to my friend Becky to use for Baby Evan :)


Dr. Browns Bottles
I know there are TONS of bottles out there, but for all 3 of mine, I used Dr. Browns. I have never even tried another brand. When I had Kate, a girl I taught with said these were the best, so I trusted her & got them. They are the best because even though there are a few parts to the bottle, it helps reduce the amount of air that gets in which means less gas for baby. I am sure there are other good bottles out there, but these are the only ones we have ever used!
What I also love about them is that the bottle mouth fits perfectly with my breast pump, so I can just pump straight into those bottles!

Exersaucer
I love excersaucers! Yes, they are big & bulky, but sooooo worth it! We start using them when our babies are about 4 months old. There is a wide variety of excersaucers out there, but I like the Evenflow one because it isn't too expensive. Ours is similar to the one linked. And, it keeps those babies entertained while you get ready, make dinner, etc. It's a life saver! Our babies use them for over a year.


Bumbo & Bumbo Tray
 I really like the Bumbo. We start using it with our babies around 3 months. It is fun for them to be able to sit up. I like the tray because you can put puffs or toys on the tray to keep baby entertained. We used it as traveling high chair when we go over to my parents or in laws. But, here's the thing. Babies get too big for bumbos at about 6-7 months old, so you are really only using it for 3-4 months. Know where I bought my bumbo for Luke? Craigslist. I got the bumbo and the tray for $20. So, if you want a bumbo, I would check your local craigslist because you can get it for half the cost. It is SO easy to clean, so I don't mind buying it from a stranger. A few bleach wipes & some soapy water & it was good to go. I got it from a sweet grandma who had it her house for her grandkids. And, now that we are done with it, we are passing it on to friends who are having their first baby this summer!


Breathable Mesh Bumper
 Did you know that it isn't safe to have real bumpers in your babies crib? For the first 3 months, our babies sleep in our room in a pack n play. But after that, I move them to their own crib. Once I move them to their crib, I take off their cute fabric bumper & replace it with this breathable one. That way, if they roll over they aren't suffocated by the fabric bumper, but there is a mesh one instead. Is it cute? Nope. But it's only temporary. The mesh one is helpful so that they don't hit their head or get limbs stuck in the crib slats. I put the normal fabric bumper back in the crib around 9-10 months once my babies can crawl around & pull to a stand. 


A few other things that aren't in the collage that we love & I want to highlight:

Fisher-Price Precious Planet 2-in-1 Projection Mobile
Yes, this is not the cutest mobile out there and it doesn't match Luke's room, but when he was 4 months old I was DESPERATE for him to sleep at night. I am pretty sure this mobile is the reason he started sleeping through the night. I did A LOT of reasearch on mobiles. I wanted one that illuminated lights onto the ceiling & played music. This one does that AND it has a remote control & timer! It also has white noise! I love the remote control feature. As I was trying to get Luke to sleep at night, I would turn this one on & after 18 minutes if he wasn't asleep yet, I would quietly stand in his doorway with the remote & it would go back on without Luke seeing me. Genius!

Chicco Polly Magic High Chair - Rattania
This is the one we got as a gift from our friends.
 I would have just gotten a Space Saver high chair  (see at the end of the post) that you attach to a chair,  BUT,  our kitchen table only sits 4 people and we have 5 in our family now, I had to get a free standing high chair.
(Side note: I will be needing a new kitchen table when Luke grows out of his high chair)
I give this high chair 5 stars. It has wheels, so it rolls (which is perfect on my hardwood) or you can lock it into place. You can adjust the height, so you can wheel them up to the table if you want. It has a tray & cover, so I just take the cover off, so easy to clean. It also fold up very narrow, so you can store it if you need to. My favorite thing about it is the mesh basket/storage behind the seat. This is where I keep Luke's container of puffs, container of Cheerios & bibs. That way, I can just put him in his high chair & toss some snacks on the tray, super easy & convenient!

I really like the Chicco high chairs, but if you want a less expensive version (with out the basket under) this is the one I had with Kate:



Chicco Polly High Chair, Foxy


This is the one I got with Claire (but a different color) We needed them both to be in high chairs, since they are only 19 months apart. But, I didn't want 2 high chairs, so I got one of these:


Fisher-Price - Space-Saver High Chair, Mocha Butterfly
I can't rave about this space saver enough. This is actually one of the baby items I did keep, we gave it to my mom to keep at her house after the girls were done using it. Once summer arrives, I am taking it back from her so that we can use for Luke when we eat dinner outside on those warm summer nights. I can keep his normal high chair inside, but use this for outside.

I also must mention baby socks. From 3-6 months, babies are finding their feet (adorable) and learning to scoot/crawl. With Kate, I just bought cheapy socks at first, but they always fell off (or she easily pulled them off) My favorite socks for babies at this age are Trumpette socks & socks from baby gap. They actually stay on!


Items that I don't think are necessary? Like I mentioned in the newborn-3 month post, I never used a wipes warmer, bottle warmer or diaper genie. Other items that I didn't use this time around that I had with the Kate: Bottle Sanitizer, Baby Robe,  lots of outfits.  Poor Luke spent the majority of his first 6 months in footie pj's. Boy clothes just aren't as cute as girl clothes. And, with the girls I totally over-bought clothes for their first year of life!

Mel's Must Have Baby Products {Newborn-3 Months}

I have gotten several emails from readers (and friends who are becoming first time moms in a matter of months. Not to mention my 2 college roommates...one had her first baby 2 weeks ago & the one who lives in Boston is in labor as I type!!!) are asking me what some of my "must haves" are for a new baby.

And, I have gotten some emails about what isn't necessary.

After having 3 babies, I have definitely figured out what works for me (and baby) during the first year. Today's post will focus on my Favorite Products for the Newborn-3 month stage. 

I am a minimalist and don't like a lot of stuff. These are things I couldn't live without!

 Pack N Play We had our babies sleep in our room for the first 3 months. I liked this Pack & Play because it has a built in changing table & diaper storage on it. Made those middle of the night changings SO much easier. It has music & sound built in which helped soothe our babies to sleep when they were fussy.  A lot of my friends loved this co-sleeper, but we decided to go for the pack & play because we knew we would get more use out of it. We use the pack & play when we travel!

 Piddle Pads You can never have too many of these. Seriously. I use them in the pack n play, crib, changing pad, downstairs for diaper changes and I keep one in my car. These come in handy those first few months when the baby blows out diapers all the time. I would have these under the baby so that if they had a major blowout, I would just toss the piddle pad in the wash instead of having wash the sheets, etc.

 Disposable Nursing Pads The Lansinoh brand is the best in my opinion. They stay put and are super absorbent. I go through TONS of these.

Swaddle Me These are the BEST. My kids slept in swaddle me's for the first 3 months of their lives. Kept them nice & cozy.

Nursing Bras (that you can sleep in) These are so comfortable. I wore them toward the end of my pregnancy as the "ladies" got larger. And, 8 months post partum I still sleep wearing one (since I am still nursing)

 Boppy

I had a boppy and a my breast friend with Kate (one for upstairs, one for downstairs) I liked the Boppy better, it was easier to use & more comfortable. And, I got more use out of the Boppy because I used it as support when the baby is learning to sit up.  I tell everyone...bring the Boppy to the hospital when you are having the baby! So nice to have it there when you are learning to nurse the baby.

Boppy Head Support for Car Seat. Kate had a case of flat head. She didn't have to wear a helmet, but she was monitored. When she was 1 month old I bought this boppy head support for her car seat to give it more cushion. Then I bought a 2nd one to put in her swing. Her flat head went away within a month.

 Fisher Price Bath Tub  Love this tub because it isn't too big and because it comes with the mesh insert for newborns.

 Pottery Barn Kids Critter Wrap Is there anything cuter than a baby wearing a hooded animal towel? I think not. I love the PBK ones because they hold up well and are cozy. And, I am a sucker for getting things personalized, so I love that! I love PBK hooded towels so much that the I got the girls these ones once they out grew the baby ones. We have had them for almost 4 years and they are not worn out at all!!

Snap and Go Stroller I could not live without this. The girls were in their infant seats for 1 year, so this snap & go stroller was a lifesaver. It is light, easy to open & close and has TONS of storage on the bottom for when you are shopping or out & about.  I tell all new moms to get a Snap & Go rather than a convertible bulky stroller.

 Peutina Pickle Bottom Diaper Bag With Luke, I don't have a diaper bag, I use a ziplock bag. But with Kate I splurged and got a peutina pickle bottom diaper bag. I used it with Claire also. Mine was pink, so I didn't use it with Luke and didn't want to buy another one. I loved this bag because it stored a ton and had an adjustable strap that easily hooks onto your stroller. I am loving all the fun patterns they have out now.

Graco Snug Ride 30 I LOVE this infant seat. This is the one I have for Luke. I like the color (black and gray, gender neutral) I gave away the one I used for the girls (same brand, different design) I was debating between the one I got and the Snug Ride 35. SO glad I got the Snug Ride 30. It is light. My sister has the Snug Ride 35 for Jack and it is SO heavy. Like, ridiculously heavy (And, more $) She has already asked if she can have Luke's car seat when we are done with it becuase she is getting rid of her Snug Ride 35.

Medela Pump in Style This is my best friend. I hang out with her every lunch period. I can't say enough about this pump. It gets A LOT of use. It has never broken and it works so well. Being a working mom, this is the pump for you. Every single teacher at my school who is a nursing mom has used this pump. It's the best! The parts are easy to clean and the black bag it comes in is great. Love, love, love.

 First Favorites from Baby Gap
All 3 of our kids' coming home from the hospital outfits were these Gap sleepers. Pink for the girls & blue and white striped for Luke. SO soft. Love this line from Baby Gap.

 Aden and Anais Muslin Swaddle Blankets These blankets weren't around when Kate was born.  But, they came out when I was pregnant with Claire. They are AWESOME. They are light weight, but they are big. I don't use a hooter hider, I just used one of these blankets to cover up when nursing in public. I also love how even though they are big, they fold up small. Claire & Luke were both summer babies, so these blankets were awesome.

 Fisher-Price Dream Swing Hands down, best swing ever.  This swing worked magic for my kids. All 3 loved it. And, I loved it because it didn't suck up batteries. The batteries lasted over 5 months in this swing (and it got a LOT of use!)

Comfort & Harmony Cradling Bouncer

This swing comes in cream, pink and blue. A friend gave us the pink one when I had Claire and another friend gave us her blue one when I had Luke. Again, super cozy bouncer that got a lot of use. Luke slept in this bouncer many a night when he was first born & fussy. He like the vibrations & soft music it played. This was a life saver! And, a sanity saver!

So there are my "Must Haves" for the first 3 months of your babies life.

A few things I never used were a bottle warmer, wipes warmer or Diaper Genie.
Those weren't necessary (in my opinion!) For diapers, we just run them straight outside to the trash.
(In the middle of the night, we would just put them in a plastic bag & take them out the next day)
