A Life Well Lived.

October 27, 1911 - May 27, 2017
My incredible Grandma passed away peacefully this weekend at exactly 105 years 7 months old.
When you live that long, every day and month counts towards your age.
If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you may have seen my posts about Grammy every year on her birthday.
Today's post is one I never wanted to write.
Part of me thought Grammy was invincible and that she would outlive all of us.
I just couldn't imagine my life without Grammy.

Grammy was the Matriarch of our family & even though we knew this day would eventually come, we are heartbroken.
Family was the most important thing to Grammy.
She loved us fiercely and always told me how much she loved me and that she was so proud of me.
Grammy was born October 27, 1911 in the Blue Hills of Idaho.
She was the 3rd child of 7 children.
(She and her youngest sister are the only ones still alive. Jean is the baby of the family & is in her late 80's)
Her family moved briefly to Oregon and then settled in Eureka, California.
She married and then became a bank teller for Wells Fargo.
She survived the Roaring 20's, The Great Depression & The World War Era.
She is a Daughter of the American Revolution.
We have had 45 US Presidents. Grammy has gotten to experience 19 of them! That is 42% of our total US Presidents.
When she was born, there were only 46 states in the USA.

In 1952, she had a surprise baby at age 41...my mom!
She has 2 daughters, 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

Look at this family photo...it was taken on her 100th birthday.
This is her legacy....this started with one single mother (my Grammy) and her 2 girls (my aunt & my mom)

The above photo doesn't include Luke, my sisters 2 kids or my cousin's 3rd child because they weren't born yet.
Grammy was blessed. Beauty from ashes.

She taught me how to be a strong & independent woman...she was the strongest woman I know & she lived through a lot in her 105 + years of life.

Grammy gave me the nickname "Missy" when I was a little girl.
She is the ONLY person who can call me that.
Grammy makes you feel special & whenever I would visit, she would tell me that the 4 years I played soccer at Colorado were some of the proudest years of her life.

Here are things that I learned from Grammy that she passed on to me:
Pink is the best color
Fall is our favorite season
Each day should be started with a cup of coffee
Surround yourself with positive people
Have a home cooked meal waiting for people when they arrive at your house
Whenever we would visit Grammy, she would wake us up in the morning by coming into the room, opening the shades and shouting
"Wake up! It's daylight in the swap"

Grammy lived about 2.5 hours from us in the Central Valley and growing up we would visit her throughout the year.
I have the best memories from my childhood going to Grammy's house. My aunt, uncle & cousins lived the same town as Grammy.
Growing up we spent every Memorial Day weekend there & every Thanksgiving at her house.
Everytime we got to Grammy's house she had a pot of homemade split pea soup on the stove (even during the summer when it is 100 degrees out!)
When my older sister and I were 10 & 12 my parents let us take Amtrack (by ourselves!) to visit Grammy. I will never forget that trip!

When my mom told me the news that she passed, I couldn't believe it happened on Memorial Day Weekend, it's bittersweet.
My childhood memories of Memorial Day are of spending the weekend at Grammy's house and watching the Indy 500 with my aunt, uncle & cousins.
My birthday often falls on Memorial Day Weekend, so growing up, most of my birthdays were celebrated with Grammy.
Memorial Day weekend will continue to remind me of Grammy.

Grammy loved to cook and feed her us.
Some of my favorite recipes are ones that I got from Grammy.
Monkey Bread, Banana Bread, Zucchini Bread & Split Pea Soup are things she made us pretty much every time we visited her.

The soup was our lunch every time we got to Grammy's house and she did this up until she was 103 years old and lived on her own.
After Grammy turned 103 and moved out of her house, my aunt and mom had us go through the house and take things that were special to us.
I knew I wanted her recipe cards.
I got stacks of Grammy's recipes held together by rubber bands that were so old they were crumbling.
Recipe cards with Grammy's handwriting.
Recipe cards typed out with flour dusted on them.
Recipes as far back from 1920's & 1930's
(Grammy dated most of her recipe cards, so I knew exactly when they were from)
Seeing her familiar handwriting on the recipe cards is so comforting.
Reading through the recipe cards & recognizing some of my favorite things from visiting Grammy's house....so priceless. The recipe cards & cookbooks still smell like Grammy's house.

My plan is to go through the recipes and make a family cookbook for all the women in our family so that we can all have a piece of Grammy's cooking in our kitchens.

The last time I saw Grammy was on her 105th Birthday.
Her vision, hearing & memory were all fading (which is to be expected when you are 105) so we knew it would just be a matter of time.  Pretty incredible to not be on any medications or have any health issues when you are that age.

Everyone always asked Grammy her advice for living so long & for being in such good health.
Here is her list of advice:
1. Surround yourself with your family and people you love.
2. Drink Coffee every morning.
3. Have a Happy Hour cocktail everyday (Grammy's preference is a Cranberry Vodka)
4. Stay away from hospitals & doctors.
5. Be positive.

Cheers to you, Grammy. You exemplified a life well lived.
There was no one like her and I can't believe she's gone.
Rest In Peace, Grammy.

This past weekend we celebrated my Grammy's 105th Birthday Party!!!!
It's tradition for me to bring her a bouquet of pink roses & a balloon for her birthday
(Pink is her favorite color...mine too!)
Grammy was born on October 27, 1911
105 years old. So crazy!!!!!
You can tell Grammy is 105....her vision, hearing & memory are all fading.
She was living on her own, in her own house until she turned 103, but the past 2 years is when being over 100 has caught up with her!

Her health is actually amazing, she doesn't take any medications (and never has)
When they do her blood work/labs, they say she is in better health than most 70 years old.
Her body (hearing/vision/memory) are just starting to shut down....because she is 105!!!!
It was so good to see Grammy & her celebrate another amazing year of life for her!

Everyone always asks Grammy her advice for living so long & for being in such good health

Halloween is one of my favorite days of year. This year our staff theme was 80's.
I knew exactly what I was going to wear. It was an outfit I wore in college to an 80's party and I also wore it to a friends 35th 80's party a few years ago.
On Sunday, I decided to step up my costume a notch and attach an 80's photo background to my back.
I literally had this exact photo background for my 8th grade photo. LOL!
I am pretty sure my girls will need counseling when they are older because I wore this to their parade & to both of their class Halloween parties. Ha!
I made the background by printing the background as a poster & putting it on foam board. I added strings & wore it like a backpack all day. Definitely one of my favorite Halloween costumes ever :)

Speaking of 2017....it's time to order my 2017 Planner!
Erin Condren Planners are my favorite!
I have used them for the past 4 or 5 years.
Here are the covers I am deciding on for my 2017 planner....

Floral:
 Watercolor:
 Marble:
I am leaning toward the floral, but can't decide! Ahhhhh!!!
Right now Erin Condren has a sale going on....save 20% on your order. It ends on the 10th.
She has TONS of different designs, but these 3 are the ones I am leaning towards.
Which one do you like?

{NINE}
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are my favorite Halloween candy.
This is so true....

I also love wine & thought any other wine lovers might enjoy this:

Which pairing will you be having tonight when you raid your kids Halloween candy bag after they are in bed? ;)

Wednesday night's Game 7 was my most favorite baseball game I have ever witnessed.
(This is coming from a die hard SF Giants fan who has been to 2 of the Giants World Series games)
The game was AMAZING. Please tell me you watched.

I have a few thoughts on the game:
I thought Giants torture was bad...Chicago fans experience this at a whole new level.
Since the Giants didn't win this "even" year, there is no other team I would rather have won than the Cubs!!!!
I may or may not have shed a few tears of happiness at the end of the game. Congrats to all my readers who are Cubs fans!
It's rough losing after a 3-1 series lead. We know that pain from when the Cleveland Cavs beat the Warriors this year when we were up 3-1....I feel for you Indians fans!
My Grammy is 105....even she can say she finally saw the Cubs win a World Series.

Hope you have a GREAT weekend!
Happy Friday!!!

104

October 27, 1911.
Today is my Grammy's 104th Birthday.
Yes.
You read that correctly.
104.
 Absolutely Amazing.

If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you probably remember me talking about my Grammy and how amazing she is.
I blog about her birthday every year because I think it's pretty incredible that she has lived to be this old.

This weekend we headed down to Grammy's to celebrate her 104th Birthday.
It's tradition for me to bring her a bouquet of pink roses & a balloon for her birthday
(Pink is her favorite color...mine too!)

Grammy currently lives in a retirement home, she lived on her own in her house until last October, right before her 103rd birthday (pretty amazing to live on your own until you are 103!!!!)
My mom and aunt moved her to old person's home because Grammy's vision was failing & she had a fall last October, so it was just time for Grammy to move out of her own house.
The home she is at is nice, there are about 30 people who live there...Grammy is the oldest.
Grammy is hysterical....She asked me why there were patches on my jeans.  I told her they were distressed jeans & they are in style. I guess when you grow up during the Great Depression, ripped jeans aren't a fashion statement :)

Grammy was doing well....you never know what you are going to expect since her memory has gotten pretty bad in the past year. I had to remind her of my name & my kids names, which I had mentally prepared myself for since my mom warned me her memory was really fading.
When I told her my name was Melissa she said "Ah yes..Melissa. That's a pretty name"

When she first saw Luke she said "Who's little boy is that?" I reminded her that Luke was my son & she said "You have a boy?!? We have a boy in the family?" It made me smile because Grammy had 2 daughters (my mom is her youngest daughter) and my mom had 3 girls & then I had my 2 girls before I had Luke, so I thought it was cute that she responded with "We have a boy in the family?"

It was so wonderful seeing my Grammy & celebrating her 104th birthday.
It's always a little emotional celebrating her birthday & seeing her and wondering if this was going to be the last time I see her....I mean she is 104 after all!
104...Incredible.

Everyone always asks Grammy her advice for living so long & for being in such good health

Happy 104th Birthday, Grammy.
Thank you for being such an inspiration to everyone who knows you.

October 27, 1911.
Yesterday was my Grandma's 103rd Birthday.
Yes.
You read that correctly.
103.
Absolutely Amazing.

If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you probably remember me talking about my Grammy and how amazing she is.
I blog about her birthday every year because I think it's pretty incredible that she has lived to be this old.
In years past, I have blogged about how incredible it is that she still lives in her own house by herself at her age.
But, unfortunately, that isn't the case anymore.
You see, 20 days ago on October 7th, we got a call from my Aunt that Grammy had a fall.
My Aunt lives in the same town as Grammy, so she checks on her several times a day.
The morning of October 7th, she went to check on her and Grammy had fallen.
Grammy wears one of those "Help, I've fallen and can't get up" necklaces so she can pull it and it will alert a dispatcher. Well, Grammy is stubborn and didn't pull it, so when my Aunt came over Grammy was on the ground. My Aunt didn't know if Grammy was hurt (because Grammy is stubborn and wouldn't say) so my Aunt called 911 and had Grammy taken to the hospital to get checked out and to make sure she didn't break anything.
The did some tests on Grammy at the hospital and nothing was broken.
They ran some labs/blood work and Grammy is 100% healthy.
The doctors and nurses couldn't believe how amazing her blood work was, they said it was better than most people who are in their 60's! That's my Grammy!
Even though Grammy  wasn't hurt, my mom and Aunt decided that Grammy shouldn't live on her own anymore. She is just too old and even though she can still walk, she is just fragile & her eyesight is going. My Aunt found a nice & clean old person's home for Grammy to live, so they moved her there right after the hosptial, just 20 days shy of her 103rd Birthday.
Pretty amazing that Grammy made it 102 years & 345 days living  by herself.
Even though it is sad that Grammy isn't living in her house anymore, it is the right decision.

This weekend we headed down to Grammy's in the Central Valley to celebrate her 103rd Birthday.
It was very strange seeing her NOT in her house.
The home she is at is nice, there are about 30 people who live there...Grammy is the oldest.
We reserved the outside area for Grammy's party.
I made my Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cupcakes (recipe HERE} but I put pink frosting on them because pink is Grammy's favorite color!
I also made the cupcake toppers.
Every year, I get Grammy a balloon & roses for her birthday.
My mom, Aunt & Grammy.
My sisters & I with Grammy.
My Aunt & her 2 sons with Grammy (my cousins are SO tall....6'4 & 6'8)
 My family with Grammy :)
Rebecca & her family with Grammy. This was the first time Grammy got to meet baby Olivia (that is Grammy's 11th great-grandchild)
4 Generations in this photo. Love it.
Me & Grammy. Can we talk about how she is rocking the side pony? Love her. She is still a spit fire!

It was so wonderful seeing my Grammy & celebrating her 103rd birthday.
It was emotional...seeing her in the home & not her home.
Wondering if this was going to be the last time I see her.
Feeling sad that her memory is fading.
What a wonderful life she has lived.
103...Incredible.

After the party, my Aunt, my mom, my sisters and I went to Grammy's house.
All her things are still there and my Aunt is going to start cleaning it out so they can sell the house.
My Aunt told us we could take things that were special to us.
It was very surreal being in her house knowing that Grammy wasn't coming back.
I had 1 thing that I really, really, really wanted from Grammy's house.
Her recipe box.
Every memory of visiting Grammy includes food & something on the stove or in the oven.
Every time we would go to her house, she was making something.
I think I get my love of cooking & baking from Grammy.
She was always making something.
When we were at her house, I asked my Aunt if I could have Grammy's recipe box.
She said sure, but she couldn't recall Grammy having one, since Grammy had memorized most of her recipes.
I looked through every kitchen cabinet.
I couldn't find it.
I looked in her pantry.
I couldn't find it.
I looked above the fridge and found some of her old cookbooks, but no recipe box.
I was bummed. I really wanted her handwritten recipes. I knew they had to be somewhere.
I looked in one last kitchen drawer and at the very back of the drawer, there they were....stacks of recipe cards held together by rubber bands.
JACKPOT.
I was so happy I could cry. I totally teared up.
Stacks of Grammy's recipes held together by rubber bands that were so old they were crumbling.
Recipe cards with Grammy's handwriting.
Recipe cards typed out with flour dusted on them.
Recipes as far back from 1920's & 1930's
(Grammy dated most of her recipe cards, so I knew exactly when they were from)

It may be Grammy's Birthday, but I feel like I got one of the greatest gifts, her recipes.
Seeing her familar handwriting on the recipe cards is so comforting.
Reading through the recipe cards & recognizing some of my favorite things from visiting Grammy's house....so priceless.

My plan is to go through the recipes and make a family cookbook for all the women in our family so that we can all have a piece of Grammy's cooking in our kitchens.
And, I will be sure to blog some of Grammy's recipes as well.

Happy 103rd Birthday, Grammy.
Thank you for being such an inspiration to everyone who knows you.

Everyone always asks Grammy her advice for living so long & for being in such good health
Here is her list of advice:
1. Surround yourself with your family and people you love.
