Things I Forgot About: 3rd Baby Edition (Plus a $100 Visa Giftcard Giveaway!)

Things I forgot about, 3rd Baby Edition.
The girls are only 19 months apart, so when I had Claire, Kate was still basically a baby.
She was still in diapers, still slept in a crib and only said a handful of words.
Fast forward 4 years and Luke is born.
Even though it has only been 4 years since Claire was a baby (and almost 6 since Kate was a baby), I have felt a little "rusty" in the the baby department.
There are several things that I have "forgotten" about when it comes to having a newborn.
One of those things is teething. Ahhhh.....teething. It's no fun.
Luke is just now 5 months, but over New Year's I noticed that his bottom 2 teeth had popped through....he wasn't even 5 months!!! I was not prepared for this because Kate and Claire didn't get their first teeth until 7-8 months old.

One of the things about teething is that it messes everything up.
Good sleeping habits? GONE. (Truth be told, Luke doesn't have very good sleeping habits, but for two nights in a row he gave us a 6 hour chunk. But, it only lasted 2 nights....Thanks to teething.)

Another thing about teething that I forgot about is the drooling.
SO much drool. You can see the remnants of drool on by his collar.
He SOAKS his clothes from drooling. I guess I should get him some bibs!
Along with the drooling comes him stuffing his fist in his mouth trying to get some relief by attempting to gnaw off his hand.

The final thing about teething that I forgot about is the diaper rash.
All 3 of my kids get a terrible diaper rash when they are teething.
(You would have thought that the horrible sleeping, drooling, fist in mouth and diaper rash would have clued me in that he was getting teeth, but no.....as a 3rd time mom I was "confident" that he couldn't possibly be getting teeth this early. Imagine how bad I felt when I saw that those 2 bottom teeth had popped in!)

Back to the diaper rash.
I was so glad that Bourdeaux's Butt Paste had sent me a tube of their butt paste to try out (Seriously, is that the best name or what? Butt Paste. There is a reason I teach 7th grade. I have middle school humor).
Luke's diaper rash was so bad (because of the teething) and I was fortunate that I had Bourdeaux's Butt Paste (giggle) on hand because Luke needed relief, ASAP.
I used it for one day with each diaper change and it cleared up.
So, now that I know he really is teething and one of his side effects of teething is diaper rash, I am going to make sure I use it with each diaper change.
This is something I didn't normally do. I have normally waited until I saw a diaper rash before I put on diaper cream/paste.
But, that is going to change now.
So, let me ask you.....
How do you kick Diaper Rash?
Do you (or did you) use diaper cream with each diaper change as a preventative measure?
OR
Did you wait until there was a rash and then treat it?
Let me know in the comments below and one lucky reader will win a $100 Visa Giftcard!
And for some comic relief, here's a cute little video from our friends at Bourdeaux's Butt Paste:

  1. I usually waited until the rash showed up to treat with cream. I also would let them air out their bum at nap time and night time.... messy, yes, but I would just lay multiple towel layers down, remove a dirty layer if/when needed, and it always helped SO much within one day.

  2. Butt paste is wonderful! As a first time mom with a 7 month old son, I was clueless! I definitely learn and research new things everyday and it is so much fun! Love your blog! :) thanks for the fun giveaway!

  3. We've used Bourdeaux's Butt Paste since Elden was born! Love that stuff so much. I think we have 3 tubes: 1 for his changing table, 1 for his diaper bag, and 1 in his pack n play :)

  4. When my little was really little...I always waited until there was a rash present to treat it. I guess I just figured he didn't need anything extra if there wasn't anything there...that and I HATED the way diaper rash cream smelled. YUCK!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I used to always wait until the rash appeared but now maybe I will try some before if I think its coming! Thanks!

  6. Ah yes....the diaper rash cream that comes with teething. SO CRUEL! The first couple of times he got it I waited until it was there to treat it, but then I got wise and started some preventative care. If I waited until it showed up it was too hard to treat and it would get so bad that his poor little cheeks would crack open and bleed. SO sad!! :(

  7. My little one constanly had a rash while teething, it was awful. So early on we used a few different things. We always put put Rawley's salve on there (that stuff is amazing). As long as we were consistent with doing it (every change, no matter what) she made it through teething.

  8. I usually wait until I see diaper rash coming on, then put on the cream. I LOVE Butt Paste! I've tried Desitin, Butt Paste, and A&D and Butt Paste was the clear winner. :)

And the name makes me laugh, too. I was at a baby shower once and mentioned Butt Paste and another girl thought I was making a potty joke about diaper rash. Haha!

  9. I waited until there was a rash to treat, but I would use the cream for a day or two after the rash was gone to make sure it didn't come right back. I would also let the tushie air out after bath time for a while using a lap pad under the bum :) (sorry, I too have middle school humor) I love the name of Butt Paste, that's just awesome!

  10. Our method is Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It really is the one that works the best for us.

  11. aww Luke, being a baby is tough! we never had to worry about diaper rash, but we would still put a walmart-brand desitin on Nolan at night to prevent it. last week (at 16 months old), he was on antibiotics, which was making him go #2 frequently, and we noticed diaper rash. it was the first time he had ever cried in anticipation of getting wiped :( we used a lot of aquaphor and the walmart desitin, and it cleared up quickly. I think he has my husband's good skin!

  12. I always used Desitin over night, even if it wasn't at night! I didnt find out about butt paste til Owen was one and a ahalf!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I use A&D with every diaper change no matter what, but when rashes occur i would use the same Butt Paste (hee hee) you're refering to for diaper changes during the day. When she has diaper rash, i also incorporate milk of magnesia (the Up & Up version from Target) after bath time. Just put some on a cotton ball and dab it on there. If it was pretty bad diaper rash I would alternate between butt paste and athlete's foot cream. The cream and milk of magnesia were both suggestions from my pediatrician and work like a charm!! Cleared up rashes in 1-2 days!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Besides using barrier creams, we would let them run around to air out without a diaper on for a little while.

  16. My three kids have always gotten bad diaper rashes, so I just lathered on the diaper rash cream during every diaper change and that always kept it away. By the way, the best diaper rash cream I've ever used is called Calmoseptine. It's an over-the-counter cream found at CVS pharmacy and it is amazing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. We still use butt paste--and Alexa is almost five!

BTW, the birthday party.....sigh. SIGH. The party was set to start at at 3:30 and the YMCA called at 2:30 to tell us that the indoor pool was broken. I don't think I can even blog about it yet. :(

    ReplyDelete
  18. I tend to use cream preventatively when my kids are under 1 year, and then gradually switch to periodic usage. I think it was more laziness on my part though. Also, I don't really know if this is common knowledge (it probably is), but a nurse at the hospital showed me where to put the cream on the diaper so that I didn't have to get my hands dirty. It's a wipe-saver.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love your blog! Thanks for keeping it real with being a mommy:) My daughter is in cloth diapers so she really doesn't get diaper rash, however two times she had BAD diaper rash due to sitting in dirty diaper too long. Poor girl! I treated it with diaper cream (can't even remember which one...white tube blue letters?) and also aired her out as much as I could. It seemed to help a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I wait until the rash appears and use Butt Paste and it usually clears right up - love that stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I found this with my last daughter and loved it! With the other two I waited until there was a rash.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't use anything unless I see a rash. Then I take that extra step. With my first 4 kids my pediatrician had us use CRISCO. yes, I said crisco. I refused at first but then I found it to be awesome (basically just natural vegetable oil). A couple of years ago they started adding butane and so he told everyone to stop.

He actually came up with his own all natural organic healing balm so I use that now. It typically works in a few hours. By the next diaper change it's almost all cleared up.

I heard of the butt paste on Oprah years ago but I didn't have a baby at the time:(. Love the name though...

    Hugs,
    Trisha

ps- All my kids didn't get any teeth till they were at least 11 months. Brady got 2 in one day at 11.5 months and I was shocked. No drooling, fussiness or anything. And now he keeps BITING me...ugh!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I use vitamin A+D with every diaper change and then switch to Butt Paste if a rash does develop. Luckily that's not very often thanks to the preventative care!

    ReplyDelete
  24. i've always waited until i see the rash starting...then i apply the cream. didn't know it is preventative, so will have to start this since i think jack is in the early phases of teething.

    ReplyDelete
  25. between my two little butts we use lots of butt paste. It is our favorite and we use it almost daily. Someone always is in need! I also love that it does not leave everyone smelling like diaper cream. :) I am not sure if I use it before or during, because we are always using it! ha! Lots of little butts = lots of tubes of paste!

    ReplyDelete
  26. We usually wait until the rash appears before putting anything on it, but I may start putting some cream on as a preventative measure, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love Butt Paste! Our toddler was allergic to Desitin so it just made the rash worse. We always wait until the rash happens to treat.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thankfully my daughter hasn't gotten a diaper rash yet but I will be sure to have this on hand for when she does!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I wait until there is a rash. We use cloth diapers and there are only a few creams you can use with cloth. So when my little one does get a rash we switch back to disposables and use Desitin in the purple tube, its my favorite.

  32. This happened to my daughters while teething, too! But unfortunately I always waited until there was a diaper rash - that was usually my first clue teeth were coming. But great idea on being more preventative and not waiting for the rash!

    ReplyDelete
  33. No teeth for Liam yet, but drool city...bibs every day and for all 4, I've always used cream at every change! Diaper rash is kept at bay :) P.S. Is is hair turning blonde?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have a 16 month old named Claire and another one on the way. I used butt paste as a preventative when she was younger but now that she is older I only start using it if she gets diarrhea. Aquaphor also works great and when she was teething she would get a rash on her chin from the drool and aquaphor helped take care of that too! Good luck your kids are beautiful!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I waited until a rash appeared. It is such a relief when little one are in pain to have something you know will work.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I put diaper cream on (desitin because I love the way it smells) only after night time bath before bed. So, I guess I do use it as a preventative!

    ReplyDelete
  37. My method was to wait if there was a rash to treat it. I don't like to use a lot of products, since my kids didn't have them too frequently.

  40. Our first little one is due in April, so I haven't used it yet but was just doing research for which brand I should get!

    ReplyDelete
  41. We had a five year gap between our second and third. It was almost like starting all over, there are so many things you forget about! Thank goodness none of mine got diaper rash very often.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I use A&D ointment every time. I like the protection I get, and if I am out running around, I don't stress about getting it changed right away. I always use it at night, as that is a long time to be stuck in a diaper. I go through about a tube a month, sometimes two tubes. One thing I will say is that my girls are different than my boy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I Think it just depends on the baby, if it is prone to rashes, then I would use it all the time if not, then I would just use when needed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I feel the same way you do! My first two were only 15 months apart so essentially they were babies together. Now with #3 on the way I feel like I'm starting over again!

Ahh, the diaper rash issue. I usually treat it when it appears and love using butt paste! I've also found that the rule with diaper rash cream is that more is better! You are trying to create a moisture barrier, so just a little dab of it isn't going to do it - you need a whole layer!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Gotta love butt paste., I also use the old school approach my daycare provider taught me by using a little cornstarch actually works pretty good too.

Recently we had a bacterial rash, though, that required Neosporin & Aquaphor to clear up (at pediatrician's recommendation). But we are back to Bourdeaux's Butt Paste again now that has cleared up!

  74. I usually waited until I saw redness or rash until I used anything. But eventually when my girls started sleeping through the night, they seemed to get more rashes (longer in a wet diaper). So, I then got into the habit of dabbing a bit of cream on right before bed for good measure.
A friend of mine I guess you could say is a bit OCD about diaper rash though. She literally goes through a big tube of Desitin every week. I watched her change a diaper once and she squirted a good ping pong size glob of the stuff and put all over her son. I couldn't believe my eyes! Random.

  115. Desitin was my savior when Diana was an infant- we were proactive with it- used it even if she was just a little red- highly recommend it!

  116. I only use it when I need it. Never thought about using it as a preventative!

  120. Usually, I only use diaper cream when I see the rash. And I have to agree, Bourdeaux's Butt Paste is the best!

  124. I usually just used desetin. Wasnt the best but in bad cases we would go to the dr and they would prescribe some meds.

  125. I love to give Boudreaux's butt paste as a baby showr gift in a basket full of "glamorous" new-mom necessities such as this! For my kids we used something during every diaper change...it was like Vaseline...maybe desetin I think? But always Boudreaux's when an actual rash appeared and it healed it quickly. I even used it once on my dry cracked winter hands....(is that gross?!) ; )
